Top Tractor Attachments for Northwest Pastures
Summer in Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington is prime time for pasture projects. On my own farm, I rely on a 15-foot flex wing cutter to keep pastures healthy and a Shaver post driver to make fencing fast. At Ag-Bag Forage Solutions, we know picking the right attachment for your unique land—hilly, rocky, or tight—can be tough. With over 20 years of hands-on experience, I’m sharing my go-to tools for mowing and fencing to make your summer projects efficient and stress-free.
Mowing Attachments: Tame Northwest Pastures
Mowing is key to healthy pastures, especially when rotating livestock like I do on my farm. The right tractor attachment saves time and handles our region’s rough terrain. Here’s what works based on my experience:

Flex Wing Cutters
- Best For: Large pastures with mixed grass and brush.
- Pros: Wide cutting path (like my 15-foot model) mows fast, perfect for big jobs.
- Cons: Needs a tractor with enough horsepower (50+ HP recommended).
I mow right behind my cows after each rotation. The wide cut gets it done quick, and I’ve seen better grass regrowth and healthier pastures since starting this.
Finish Mowers
- Best For: Manicured pastures or residential lawns.
- Pros: Gives a smooth, lawn-like finish for a polished look.
- Cons: Not built for tall grass or rough ground—stick to lawn-like conditions.
I see folks buy finish mowers thinking they’ll handle overgrown pastures. They’re not designed for that and burn out fast. Get this wrong, and you’re spending more to replace it.
Flail Mowers
- Best For: Versatile cutting on uneven terrain.
- Blade Options: Grass knives for clean cuts; hammer blades for brush or small trees.
- Pros: Handles hills and mixed vegetation like a champ.
- Cons: Hammer blades can leave a rougher cut on grass.
Choosing the Right Fit
For big pastures, a flex wing cutter (like those from Woods, which we recommend) maximizes efficiency. Finish mowers are great for tidy lawns but not rough fields—don’t make that mistake. Flail mowers are the middle ground for mixed terrain. Match your tractor’s PTO and hitch to avoid underpowered setups. Efficiency matters to me since I juggle work and farming, so I lean toward bigger tools like my flex wing to get more done in less time.

Fencing Attachments: Build Sturdy Pasture Fences

Fencing keeps livestock secure, but Northwest soils—rocky or clay-heavy—can make it a chore. Here are the attachments I trust:
Shaver Post Drivers
- Best For: Fast fencing on any property size.
- Pros: Cuts post installation time by at least half, especially when working solo.
- Cons: Less versatile for non-fencing tasks.
On my farm, the Shaver post driver is way faster than digging, plus driven posts are much sturdier than hand-tamped ones.
3-Point Post Hole Diggers
- Best For: Smaller fencing jobs in standard soils.
- Pros: Digs clean, precise holes, saving hours of manual labor.
- Cons: Struggles in rocky coastal soils.
Hydraulic Augers (Loader-Mounted)
- Best For: Tough, rocky soils or operators with limited mobility.
- Pros: Powers through hard ground and lets you work while facing forward.
- Cons: Needs higher horsepower (30+ HP recommended).
A customer with a 25-acre small farm near Warrenton has a neck injury that makes turning his head tough. With a loader-mounted hydraulic auger, he now installs posts himself, no extra help needed.
Choosing the Right Fit
For speed and solo work, a Shaver post driver is hard to beat—it’s why I use one. 3-point diggers suit smaller jobs in softer soils. Hydraulic augers are ideal for rocky ground or operators like our Warrenton customer who need to work smarter.
Pro Tip: Call 811 before digging—it’s free and saves you from hitting utilities.

I grew up on a working farm with parents who manufactured machinery. I've been selling tractors and implements since 2014, and I run my own 20 acres plus help manage our family's 200-acre beef operation. Everything I recommend is something I'd put on my own property.
